Essentially, this is a love story about two damaged people (one of them extremely so), who find their HEA. It stands out from so many of the others in this genre because of the quality of the writing, the development of the characters and the well-portrayed, ensemble cast.

The author has dealt with some very heavy issues - sexual abuse of children, autism, terminal illness - yet, has done so with empathy and created a story that isn't one big, depressing tear-jerker. Everything is realistically portrayed. It's not a light, fluffy romance and shouldn't be read with this expectation; rather, it's the story of people living with challenges who learn to appreciate that life can still offer them love, happiness and acceptance.

Highly recommended and look forward to more from this author.

A Moment Moments Series Book 1 edition by Marie Hall Anne Victory Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

At first it was a little difficult to get into this book. I found myself being easily distracted but I forged ahead. I'm glad I did because this book tells a story of two different types of suffering that no one should have to go through, one much more heart-wrenching than the other.

Ryan has a terrible secret from his youth that only he and his cousin know about and he wants to keep it that way. But every year on Valentine's Day he falls into a deep depression. Lili had a child at 14 and now while going to university and working a part-time job she must care for an autistic child and ailing mother.

I'm not exactly sure what drew me to this book but it's very different from those I've read before. This is a real story (not a true story--there's a difference), as real as it can be, about two damaged people who find each other and somehow manage to bring forward the love for each other that has been denied them.

The only thing I found odd was the unresolved feeling Lili had that they had met before. They had unofficially when they were both in the same ER years ago. Ryan was there because he needed some wounds attended to and Lili was there because she was constantly vomiting only to later discover she was pregnant. Even years later seeing Ryan in similar clothes he had worn that day in the ER, Lili still doesn't place him. Only after Ryan talks about where he attended high school does Lili assume that she had probably seen him in the halls. That's how the deja vu is resolved.

There are several sections in the book pertaining to Ryan's past that are not for the faint of heart. Be prepared with a box of tissue and a swear jar if you use one because the trauma he went through and the resulting nightmares he has will make you cry and swear.
What first drew me into this book was one of the main characters, Ryan. He was damaged, broken, but had so much potential. He reminded me of myself in many ways. I felt the same way as the other main character Liliana. She wanted to save Ryan so much, just as I wish I could save him from himself. She saw something amazing and worthwhile in Ryan--something even Ryan couldn't see, which made me love her character even more! I love flawed characters and character relationships to be a bit difficult. It feels more realistic to me.

Liliana thought her life was over when she got pregnant when she was 14. That is, until she fell in love with her child, Javi, and became a mother. Now, her son and mother are her whole life. Her child is autistic, so she feels pained that he doesn't want her touching him, hugging him, and will probably never tell her he loves him, but still, she's happy with her life, she loves Javi with all her heart, and didn't think anything was missing in her life.

Until she meet Ryan.

Ryan is broken. After something terrible happens in this childhood that still haunts him today, he doesn't know how to feel. He lives life going through the motions. To escape his past, he joined the military and tried to forget the past. But the past can never be forgotten. Seven years later, after coming back home, to where it all started, he begins to start feeling his life going out of control. Especially on Valentines day...the day everything changed for him. He tries to end it all Valentines day night, but is stopped by Liliana. And he soon realizes life is worth living...if you have someone with you who loves you.

Can Liliana save him? Can they save each other?

I can honestly say that I really enjoyed this story. There was so many different emotions you, as the reader, will experience with this book. Sadness, happiness, worry, and hope are a few I felt. I think this story was nicely written and I really enjoyed reading from both the main character Pov's.

I highly recommend this book!

My favorite quotes

"Because in the end, it's the moments that make life worth living..."

"Te amo con todo mi corazon, pero lo estas rompiendo.' I love you with all my heart, but you're breaking it."

"You have one life, whatever happened to you, whoever did that to you...Don't let them win."

"I need Ryan the same way I need to breathe. He's my air and the reason why I get out of bed wearing a smile in the middle of the hell my life is becoming."
