Coming Home for Christmas An Anthology Carla Kelly 9780373296682 Books

I think the blog gives a good description of these heartwarming stories for the upcoming holiday. Nothing warms a Christmas fan as much as a good read that brings into perspective what matters. Each of the three stories offers love that comes in an unexpected time and place. Generations of men and woman struggling through the tragedy of war. Carla Kelly invents such wonderful characters with such integrity you fall in love with them more on each page. I tell you the first story begins in 1809 when Thomas Wilkie receives a letter from his papa hoping for his safe return within the next 2-3 years and by the end of this story I was so wrapped up in his and Laura's story I hated it to end but then the next one starts and I enjoyed it even more. Lilly is trying to get back to her son for Christmas. She makes it home to Will but its not just her coming home. I loved Trey for his supportive and protective nature. so imagine my surprise when the last story in the book ties it all together as Will is now a surgeon himself as his grandfather and finds out smart in medicine and science he may be but when dealing with matters of his own heart he has a lot to learn. I loved his humor and laughed out loud when he and Francie kiss and she says," that her da says he has a bad habit of doing that."

Now she is referring to how things can go wrong in his work and he later questions rather or not he made the right choice. When Francie makes the comment after their first kiss he comes back with," Francie, I've never kissed your father." He is written so serious up to this point so you can't help but laugh. Out came his playful side once that started. Leaving me feeling warm and fuzzy and it wasn't from my hot cocoa. The perfect book to get you ready for the holidays! Enjoy!

Coming Home for Christmas An Anthology Carla Kelly 9780373296682 Books Reviews

It's 70 ° out and I read this Christmas series 2x because it was so special and so delightful. Three short stories pulled together as a story through three generations. Absolutely wonderful. Carla Kelly is unmatched in the craft of historical fiction set in the 1800's. These heartfelt, deeply loving and noble stories are a treasure.
Three generations of a family. Each one about a family member serving in the service in the medical field. Like all Carla Kelly stories they are full of historical details and heartwarming romance. Good reading.
Three wonderful stories that deliver on all counts. They are wonderful romances. They all take place at Christmas. They all deal with important Christmas lessons of generosity to our fellows even in difficult circumstances. I reread them often.
Carla Kelly writes stories that are not truly romances. Instead, the reader is placed in an intriguing location with appealing characters who need to work through problems and issues of loneliness or circumstance. In Coming Home for Christmas, which has 3 stories, the first is set in San Diego around 1810. The second story takes place during the Crimean War, around 1850. The third takes place on a train trip from the upper plains of the US back to Philadelphia. Somehow, Kelly makes you feel as if you are in these disparate locations and situations. In each story, there is sorrow and humor, death and new hope or life.

The books succeed as escapist fare, even though some of her depictions of illness and death are quite graphic. The stories are very well written and the characters act appropriately for the time period and setting. But the characters also make you love them as you wish for these good people to find the love and peace they so richly deserve.

Enjoy!
I greatly enjoyed this trio of stories about members of the same family. The historical references, besides being accurate, added to the stories and my interest level. All 3 stories were interesting and fun and were varied enough to feel fresh.
I pre-orded this book several months ago because I am a Carla Kelly fan, knowing it was an anthology, but somehow missed the fact that Carla Kelly had written all the stories. So, it was was a treat to find out that I had three Carla Kelly stories to read! "Coming Home for Christmas" is an anthology about three generations of soldiers, beginning in 1812 with British naval surgeon Thomas Wilkie, who makes a marriage of convenience with Laura Ortiz who is abandoned in California due to family problems. This is my favorite story, partly because it takes place in the regency era, even though it isn't a British lord and lady story. Thomas and Laura are my favorite characters in the book. Their romance is given time to develop and that may be because their story is the longest one in the anthology. Working together to help victims in an earthquake brings this seemingly mis-matched couple to find out exactly how well-matched they are.
The next story is about Thomas and Laura's widowed daughter Lilian, who is working as a nurse in the Crimea in 1855. There are interesting glimpses into the Florence Nightengale era. The story of Laura and Major Trey Wharton was touching, and I think the only thing that would have made it better was to have it be longer because some issues were mentioned briefly but didn't have time to be fully developed. For example,I wanted to know a little more about her previous marriage, because it seems like she had mixed feelings about her deceased husband.
The final story, taking place in 1877 features Laura's son from her first marriage, Captain Wilkie Wharton. He finds his true love in Mary Francis Coughlin, someone he had known for a year at Fort Laramie, but saw in a new light as they made a difficult journey, dealing with an orphaned baby and a white former captive of the Cheyenne who is torn between her former life and her life as part of the tribe.
I inhaled this anthology, finishing it in one sitting. I enjoyed the Christmas theme interwoven through the stories, as well as the fact that the trilogy started with one special couple, and continued through the lives of their children and grandchildren. My complaints about not feeling that the last two stories were developed enough stems from the fact that I am spoiled by reading Carla Kelly trilogies made up of three complete books! She always leaves me wanting more. Overall, this book was a treat for this Carla Kelly fan. It has the gritty details of medical life and the harsh conditions of previous eras, so it isn't sugar-coated. The heroes and heroines were the warm and "real" people I have come to expect from Carla Kelly. This is another one for my "keeper shelf."
